Ebook Commander You You and the Time Penny (Book 2) read Online! Hi! I’m Lauren-Kate. I’m 12 years old and I’m the author of two published books. If you told me two years ago that I would be a published author with two novels I would have said you were crazy. I didn't have any of the qualities that I thought a writer needed to have. I had horrible spelling, my writing was messy, I would forget punctuation and capitalization constantly, I couldn't type, and writing even a paragraph was a struggle. But I love to tell stories and when I play I always create worlds full of characters with their own personalities and intricate story lines.

In the fall of 2011, I started taking a writing class with a friend’s mom. We spent several weeks on character development and plot. Our first writing assignment was to write our first chapter. That week I turned up with only a single, messy, handwritten page – the result of many hours spent on my bed writing painfully slowly.

Failure.

But then, my writing teacher, Ann Campanella, suggested that I try dictating to my mom. I said I would try, but secretly I thought it would never work and it was just a crazy idea. My mom agreed to do it but said that she would only type exactly what I said and I would have to go back and add paragraph breaks and any punctuation beyond basic periods. I tried that, and in the second week I came in with 10 typed pages! Each week I would bring my pages to class and we would each read our chapters aloud and then give each other feedback.

I love to write fantasy where I can create a world with its own laws and unique creatures, where anything is possible. While writing my novels I had fun dreaming up people made of pasta, planets made of cheese and lots of funny and strange creatures such as Tichywicks, Grickles and even a Wackamasaurus.

I finished the first draft of my first novel in about four months and then edited for six months. My second novel took me about six months to write and seven months to edit. So here I am, two years later, with two novels in the series and will soon start on my third. I learned with my first book that writing “The End,” is just the beginning of finishing a book. I now know that editing is one of the most important parts of writing a book.

My books are aimed at 7-11 year-old and I've been very careful not to add any violence that you couldn't have a four year-old in the room while reading aloud.

What’s the most unusual thing about me? I love to fence! I fence at least three days a week. We describe it as playing chess with swords at 100 mph. It has lots of strategy and you get a great workout. What could be better than spending hours every week learning how to fight with swords?

When I’m not writing or fencing I like playing the piano, reading, rock climbing with my friends, or spending the day in the woods climbing trees, swinging from vines, chasing frogs through the creek and generally exploring.

I have a cat named Fluffy who really is as unique, haughty and lovable as the cat in my books.

My characters were inspired by my best friend Abby and her brother David moving across the country. We don’t get to see each other very often so it is fun to write about her and me and all the adventures we could have if we lived in space.

My teacher, Ann Campanella, is also an author and a poet. Please check out her poetry books and her new memoir, Motherhood: Lost and Found on her website www.anncampanella.com or here on Goodreads. Her daughter, my friend and fellow young author, Sydney Campanella, also has two novels (mysteries!) that I think you will enjoy. Find out more about Sydney and her books on her website: www.sydneycampanella.com or here on Goodreads.

I hope you enjoy my books!
